Biography

Dermatologist, investigator, and scientist in cutaneous carcinogenesis.

Dr. Brownell is a board-certified dermatologist and tenured Senior Investigator in the Dermatology Branch of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. He serves as Chief of the Cutaneous Development and Carcinogenesis Section and Co-Leader of the Dermatology Branch.

He directs a research program investigating the development and maintenance of stem cells in normal skin and the changes that occur during the formation of skin cancer, with a particular focus on Merkel cells and Merkel cell carcinoma. His work spans basic, translational, and clinical research.

In addition to his research program, Dr. Brownell serves as an attending physician on the NIH Clinical Center Dermatology Consultation Service, co-directs the Cutaneous Oncology Program at the Murtha Cancer Center, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and is an Adjunct Investigator at the National Cancer Institute.
